Jyväskylä Sinfonia

Jyväskylä Sinfonia is a classical music gem in Central Finland, whose heart beats in Jyväskylä and plays throughout the region. The orchestra's nearly 120 events reach more than 35 000 listeners every year, from symphony concerts to genre-bending special productions and music events for all ages. Since autumn 2024, the orchestra’s chief conductor is Italian maestro Lorenzo Passerini. Okko Kamu plays the role as the principal guest.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia was founded in 1955 and the orchestra was first municipalised in 1965. The history of the orchestra includes several periods in which it has operated as a private company instead of a municipal organisation. Currently, the orchestra employs 39 full-time musicians.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia is active in concerts throughout its home county and in summer festivals throughout Finland. Jyväskylä Sinfonia also works closely with Jyväskylä Opera. At the beginning of 2024, a new chapter in Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s history began when the orchestra moved to new facilities in Paviljonki and its renovated Encore Hall. At the same time, the planning of the music hall will continue as part of the City of Jyväskylä's cultural plan.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia has made numerous recordings with various record companies. The most recent album was released in February 2023, with Ville Matvejeff conducting music by Per Henrik Nordgren. Recordings include also Pekka Kostiainen's Easter oratorio Triduum Paschale and Requiem, albums with baritone Waltteri Torikka, Aulis Sallinen's 80th anniversary album with Meta4 and an album of music by Éric Tanguy.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia's activities include, as an integral part, audience work and active reaching out to its listeners through various means. Sinfonia on the Move week every spring and autumn, which has already become a tradition, brings the orchestra's musicians close to people's everyday lives; small groups perform in a wide variety of venues, from service buildings to shopping centres. Annual school concerts introduce the symphony orchestra and art music to students. The orchestra also makes accessible concert recordings.
